This is a message from Mrs. Shinness ….

Hello Parents!

We are looking forward to our spring concert and this year instead of our usual “Spring Showcase” the Kindergarten – Grade 3 classes will be performing “The Music Machine” on Monday, May 13 at 6:30pm.

We are asking that students wear jeans or uniform pants, sneakers, and a short sleeved t-shirt in a solid colour of your choosing, with no printing on the front (shirts may be turned inside out to hide printing if needed).

On February 5th and 7th, the children will be video recording some dialogue with the Conductor, played by Mrs. Shinness in our studio.  We are asking that all students please bring a solid-colour t-shirt with no printing on the front.  They can change into the t-shirt before heading to the studio.

The following classes will be recorded on the following days:

Feb 5th: Grade 3 (Mrs. VanLeeuwen)

Please make sure your child brings their shirt on the day they will be recorded.

We are also in need of assistance from any willing parents who would love to create some props.  We need 2 large snail costumes.  If you would like to help, please contact Alynne Shinness (ashinness@highroadacademy.com) or Angela Kennedy (akennedy@highroadacademy.com)

Missions Fundraiser

The Missions team is raising money to fund their water filter project. Donations can be brought in to the school office, or done online (Clean Water Project Donations (jotform.com). Donations over $20 get a tax receipt I am sending donation forms home with all of the students today. If you want to send in cash or cheque (payable to City Life Church), please fill out the form and it can be returned to the office with the donation.

We are also collecting hand sized stuffies, and our class has done an amazing job getting this started! If you want to send in more, they can be brought in to the classroom.

It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of January. The students have been working so hard and making good progress. Tomorrow is a Pro D day so there will be no classes.

In Math, we have been working on division and multiplication. The students have been working hard. The grade 4s have been working in division and multiplication review and multi digit division.

In Language Arts, we have been working on Instructional writing. We are coming to the end of that unit and will be making pizza as our end project. The students will make the pizza and then write their final How to Writing. We have also started a new novel study: The One and Only Ivan.

In Science, we have been learning about the earths rotations and how that affects day and night, as well as the seasons.

In Socials, we have been learning about the Fraser River gold rush and the Cariboo gold rush.

Here is a list of the students in the class in case your kids want to get started on Valentines cards. I will be sending a paper list home sometime this week.

Just a reminder that we are leaving promptly at 8:05 so please be at the school at 7:55. We will meet in the Foyer. You can send siblings at that time as well if you would like as supervision starts at 8:00am. please pack easy to eat snacks, and lunch (without containers) as well as a water bottle. Please don’t send heavy or large items as they are responsible to carry their own belongings.

Fly Over Canada

Hello parents

We are so excited to go on our field trip to Fly Over Canada, and the Port of Vancouver Discovery Center This Wednesday January 24th.

A few things to note:

-We are leaving at 8:05 sharp so please be here by 7:55. We cant wait for late comers.

-students can wear play clothes

-please pack an easy to eat lunch with lots of snacks and a water bottle.

-we will be leaving Vancouver to return home at 1:30 so traffic depending we should be here at the end of the day. I will blog if we will be late.

Missions Dessert Night

The Philippines Missions team is hosting a dessert night tomorrow at 7pm. Our very own Mrs. Orrell is part of this team, and would love to see you there!! This is a great opportunity to learn more about what the team will be doing, as well as a chance to raise funds for the Water Filter Project. Tickets can be purchased through the office or at the door.

Bibles

Some students have not yet brought in a bible, this is one of the required school supplies.

We are starting a Bible Scavenger. We will be working on this for a couple of weeks. Students need to have their own bible to be able to do this. If you have not yet sent a bible in with your students, please do so ASAP. We use NIV at Highroad. While it is fine to send in other versions, your student will have the least frustration if they can follow along with the class using the same version. Thank you!

Memory Verse

We have started a new memory verse: I sent home a paper copy yesterday.

We will be working on Ephesians 3:14-21.

I will test the first 2 verses next Friday, January 19.
