Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day. Students can wear an orange short with casual bottoms (they can wear any shoes as long as if wearing sandals they have a back strap).

Monday there is no school for Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Terry Fox Run

Thank you parents for the donations today. All students Kindergarten to grade 6 ran together from 11:00-11:30. The students were amazing and what a beautiful sight to see them running for an important cause. I was so proud of them!!

Book Bags

I apologize for any confusion around the book bags sent home yesterday, I realize that I did not explain well enough.

  1. If your child came home with an empty book bag then I would like you to read any book you like with your child for 15 min every night. You can write down the book you read on the reading chart.
  2. If your child came home with an alphabet booklet you can do that booklet with them and sign the chart. The booklet does not need to be returned.
  3. If your child came home with a book then please read that book for 5 days and then return it for a new one.

Once your child has filled out their whole reading chart they can return it for a prize and bring home a new chart.

Field Trips

We will be doing several field trips this year with the first one in October to the Taves Family Apple Barn. I just wanted to remind parents that if you are wanting to join us on any of the field trips you will need to have a Criminal Record Check done. You can get the paperwork at the office as well as check to see if the one you have is still current as they do expire.

Important information

Rainy Weather Alert

As the rainy season begins, we want to remind parents that students will head outdoors for recess, even in the rain. Students must be dressed appropriately for all types of weather. We kindly request that you ensure your child comes to school prepared with the necessary attire to stay dry and comfortable during rainy days.

Thank you!

Toonies for Terry

We are excited this year to do the Terry Fox Run together as a whole department (K-6). We will be doing a 30-minute walk/run on Monday, September 23rd. Students are invited to wear Knight Clothes on this day. We are asking each child to bring in at least $2 to fundraise for Cancer Research.

This week has been awesome! The students are working hard on building stamina and getting settled and ready to work. I have LOVED getting to know them and their lovely personalities. This week we have been working on reviewing our alphabet and numbers. We are working on building number sense and printing digits to 9. In science we talked about our 5 senses an went on a scavenger hunt using our 5 senses. We talked about the rules of school and and home and some responsibilities and rights that we have. Today we painted apples in art and have a yummy popsicle to celebrate the end of the week.

The month of September will be dedicated to learning routines, reviewing our phonograms and letter names, reviewing numbers and counting, and assessing where they are so that we can move forward to learning to read. Next week I will be sending home a reading bag with either alphabet flashcards or books depending on where your child is at. I encourage you to read with your child every night. in hte book bag you will also find a home reading chart. Please sign this on the nights you read and when it is full they can bring it back for a prize.

In grade one we typically do hand to hand pick up at the end of the day but I do understand that sometimes that’s inconvenient. If you would prefer that I just dismiss your child at the end of the day you can send me an email and I am happy to do that.

Reminders and important dates

-Tuesday is picture day

-Thursday is library

-please send in gym shoes if you haven’t already done that

WELCOME!!!

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be your child’s teacher this year! First grade is a crucial time for growth and development, and I am eager to collaborate with you to support your child’s journey toward their full potential. I will be using this blog as the primary means of communication. To ensure a smooth start to the school year, I wanted to provide you with some important information.

Water Bottles

Please send a water bottle to school with your child. We are not able to access the water fountain but do have a sink to fill up our water bottles.

Gym

We will have gym three times a week. All your child needs is a pair of gym shoes that will stay in their locker for the year. Please don’t send shoes with lights of characters as per the uniform policy.

Library

Our Library day is Thursday. Students will not be taking books home this week but will start next week. Please return their library books every Thursday.

Planners

I will start sending planners home in the next couple of weeks. No need to sign them. We will write in our planners on Mondays for the week. If you need to communicate with me the best way to do that is by email. I respond to my emails quickly.

Art

We will have Art on Fridays and will be doing a fair bit of painting so if you are concerned with your child getting paint on their clothes please send in a paint shirt and they can keep it in there locker. (All the paint we use is washable)

Fridays

Every Friday is Knight Day so students are able to wear a knight shirt and casual bottoms with any shoes they would like (No footwear without a back strap please for safety reasons). If you need Knight clothes you can inquire at the office.

Fridays is also stuffy Friday in my class. Students are invited to bring a stuffy to school on Fridays. Please don’t send anything sentimental or of great value as accidents happen and sometimes 5 and 6 year old’s lose things. This is a optional fun activity but they do not have to participate if they choose not to.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to email me at avanleeuwen@highroadacademy.com

Today was a wonderful day and I am looking forward to our first full day tomorrow!
